Constructing around Julián Álvarez through pivotal signings
As Atlético Madrid finishes its present LaLiga season, minds are already focused on next summer’s transfer window. Although there are goals still to be accomplished, from competing in a possible second-place finish to a strong appearance in the Club World Cup, the club’s mind is also on crafting the next chapter of its squad. Atlético’s approach is clear, guided by Carlos Bucero: strengthen around their newly signed star, Julián Álvarez.
A plan focused on Álvarez
Atlético’s sensational capture of Julián Álvarez from Manchester City was a stroke of genius that has brought in one of Europe’s most promising stars to Madrid. Argentine striker Álvarez has already become the linchpin of the side’s attack, and now attention turns to building a side capable of filling the gaps around him on the field. Signings such as Le Normand, Sorloth, and Gallagher, together with loan signings Lenglet and Musso, have all contributed positively, but it’s obvious that Atlético have work to do in terms of filling its holes.
One of the main jobs facing Atlético leadership is filling these holes—especially in defense, midfield, and on the left wing. Atlético's recent signings identify a clear plan: make a single, strong acquisition in each of these areas, and overhaul the left flank wholesale to make a fresh, dynamic appearance from it.
Primary Priorities during the Next Transfer Window
With a view to competing against financial giants such as Barcelona and Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid are ready to make a substantial financial push this transfer window. Though the nature of their expenditure would be determined by what the market has to offer, two signings are clear priorities:
Cuti Romero: The Tottenham Argentine center-back has been identified as the perfect candidate to strengthen Atlético’s defensive line. As veteran players Azpilicueta and Witsel leave, and a need to resolve Lenglet’s future, Romero stands top of the transfer wish list. Tottenham’s asking fee of €70 million was high, but Atlético hopes to secure a better agreement.
Baena: Atlético are interested in signing Villarreal’s gifted Spanish international, Baena, in midfield. His €60 million release clause is a significant stumbling block, but hopes are that a deal can be agreed that takes his services to the Madrileno side. The ability of Baena to play in a number of different positions would give the side a useful option in midfield.
Key Positions Strengthened: Finding a Midfielder and a Reserve Forward
Besides reinforcing defense and midfield, Atlético has a significant call to make in attack as well. With Griezmann’s position changing, from a starters' player to a luxury option in a way similar to Koke this season, this would require Atlético to have a solid striker to plug the gap. The new signing would enable the side to have attacking depth while allowing Griezmann to adjust to his new position.
Additionally, the club has been looking to sign a number 5 midfielder since the summer of 2023. Thomas Partey continues to be identified as the first choice, and Atlético would love to sign him as a free agent when his contract at Arsenal comes to an end. That said, there are a number of top clubs in pursuit of his services, making things extremely competitive.
Finally, a backup goalkeeper also looks possible. Atlético would like to renew Musso’s contract, but are also keen on bringing in a new keeper on a free transfer to have a guaranteed backup in between the sticks.
Reimagining the Left Wing: Atlético's area of greatest change
The most significant change in Atlético’s offseason plans will come on the left side of the field. Although present left-back Galán has performed well, especially against strong opponents, Atlético clearly needs more power on this side of the field. It’s most likely that this means adding a new left-back who can play at a top level.
But that revamp doesn't end there. Atlético also have in mind reinforcing the left flank by signing a player who has something to contribute in attack. Whereas Baena has been used on the left at Villarreal, Atlético are on the lookout for a winger who specialises in dribbling, beating defenders, and creating attacking finesse in games. Such a player would be similar to Lino, who has been a useful asset playing in a more advanced position in a central attacking midfield role.
