Tottenham Set €70m Price Tag on Cristian Romero as Real and Atletico Circle
April 29, 2025
Tottenham Hotspur may be willing to sell centre-back Cristian Romero this summer — but only if clubs are prepared to pay the hefty fee reportedly demanded by the North London side. According to Spanish reports, Tottenham have placed a €70 million (around £60m) price tag on the Argentina international. The 27-year-old defender has been linked with a move away in recent months, after missing significant parts of the current season through injury and expressing visible frustration over his situation at the club. In March 2025, reports emerged that Romero was unhappy with how Tottenham had managed his injury and recovery. In early April, Romero publicly declined to commit his future to Spurs beyond the current campaign, explicitly leaving the door open for a summer transfer. During a recent interview, he even spoke enthusiastically about the prospect of playing in Spain’s La Liga, stoking speculation that a move to a Spanish club could be on the cards. Both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have been linked with the Argentina centre-back. Atletico are believed to be especially keen to strengthen their defence ahead of next season. Spanish sports outlet Marca reports that Tottenham are willing to do business if a club meets their €70m valuation of Romero. Such an offer would allow Spurs to part ways with the player while recouping a significant fee. Atletico Madrid appear set for a summer defensive overhaul: veteran duo Cesar Azpilicueta and Axel Witsel are expected to leave when their contracts expire, and there is no guarantee that Clement Lenglet’s season-long loan will be made permanent. Real Madrid, meanwhile, have struggled with centre-back depth this season and could also be in the market for reinforcements, especially if David Alaba departs. In short, both Spanish giants have clear needs at the back that could align with Tottenham’s willingness to sell Romero. Tottenham’s demanding price tag reflects the value they place on Romero. The Argentina international joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021 (initially on loan), with the transfer later made permanent for a reported £42.5 million. At the time, this fee made him the club’s second-most expensive signing behind the record transfer of Tanguy Ndombele. Even at the current valuation, Tottenham would still stand to make a profit on any sale. Romero’s quality is beyond doubt. At his best he is widely regarded as one of Europe’s top central defenders and was a key starter for Argentina during their triumphant 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar. His form at Serie A side Atalanta had originally put him on Tottenham’s radar, and his international pedigree underscores why the Premier League club have set such a premium price. The Argentine defender’s career path has seen him rise quickly through European football. He moved from Argentina to Italy at age 20, excelling for Genoa before earning a move to Juventus in 2019. Romero never made a first-team appearance for Juventus, remaining on loan at Genoa and then moving to Atalanta on a similar temporary deal. Atalanta eventually secured his services permanently in 2021 for around €16 million – a fraction of the €26m Juventus had paid for him. That bargain fee for Atalanta now looks like a steal, as Tottenham’s current valuation reflects how highly Romero is regarded at the top level.
